Nominees Needed for Great Kids Award

Alberta Children’s Services continues looking for nominations for their 2018 Great Kids Award.

Nominations opened in October, and they are due by 4 PM on Friday, November 24, 2017.

Children’s Services Communications Specialist Laura Fedoriw discussed what the requirements were with the Trending 55 Newsroom.

“Anyone can nominate a great kid, except if they’re a nominee themselves,” said Fedoriw. “Nominators have to submit a description of why they think the person should be nominated, along with two letters of support. Basically, their nomination has to speak to the impact they’ve made on other people’s lives, along with the challenges that they have overcome.”

Fedoriw says there have been various types of winners since the award was first launched back in 1999.

“For example, we had one winner last year who was visually impaired,” she said. “He then mentored other children who were visually impaired to use technology to improve their lives, to help them learn better while in school.

“We also had another award winner with cancer,” Fedoriw continued. “He then mentored other classmates about his illness, in order to get them to understand the illness just a little bit better.”

Each nominee has to be between the ages of 5 and 18. To nominate somebody, each person will have to fill out a paper or online nomination form. Items that must be included includes the nominee’s contact information (including the birthdate), a parent or guardian consent to be nominated for a Great Kids Award, a one or two page letter from the nominator on why the nominee deserves to win, along with two additional one-page letters supporting the nomination.

Typically in the past, Fedoriw says they previously received around 100 nominations.

“We’re a little behind that number this year,” she said. “But we’re hoping to see numbers pick up soon. We do consider nominations from right across Alberta, and we like to see good representation from both the rural and urban communities.”

Fedoriw adds that nominees can be a parent, a teacher, a coach, a pastor, a social worker, a neighbour, and even the kid’s peers.
