Northern Exposure Tour Lives Up To The Name

Friday night was the Northern Exposure tour stop for Steel Panther and Buckcherry in Edmonton and it ended up living up to the name and the 18+ event listing. The show would see a fun set from Buckcherry followed by the raunch of Steel Panther.

Buckcherry was the first of the co-headlining acts where they would play favourites like “Lit Up,” “Sorry” and “Crazy Witch” (name altered to keep things somewhat clean) in their set. Josh would start out nicely dressed with a bandana wrapped around his head but by the end up the set he was topless, which wasn’t surprising. Josh and the guys put on an energetic performance dancing and grooving to the tunes as he belted out the lyrics, even playing the tambourine. They are just as good as I remember them being a few years back when I caught them opening for Alice Cooper in Abbotsford.

The main attraction was Steel Panther, a band you likely haven’t heard of unless you caught them on a recent season of America’s Got Talent. Steel Panther is a comedy glam metal band that one could imagine Motley Crue was like in the 80s in LA Clubs. Singing songs about sex, dugs and rock and roll and funny jokes and stories throughout the night. I must say it is only the second time at a concert I have seen pole dancers on stage, the first being Snoop Dogg not even a year ago. They would open with “Eyes of a Panther” and close with “Death To All But Metal” before the encore. I was made aware of them in high school by a friend and I was always curious to what they would be like live and it was slightly crazier than I thought at 15. The band would also bring a female fan on stage and serenade her with some fun short songs before inviting women of all kinds to join them on stage for a few songs.

This was a show that pending your brand of humor you would either love or be offended by but everyone there knew what they were getting and loved every second of it. I would love to see and snap photos of Steel Panther again if the chance came up.
