The Northland School Division will be redrawing its boundary maps and reducing the amount of trustees.

“With the last election, we had 11 trustees in 11 areas,” says Superintendent, Dr. Nancy Spencer-Poitras.

“There is one area we no longer have schools in, so we are taking that area – because we still have provincial students in that area that our school would be accountable for.”

Spencer Poitras says it is Area Five that is being merged.

Spencer-Poitras also took some time to praise Cenovus Energy and gave a strong “yes” when asked if the Calgary based oil sands company is a friend of the school division.

“Cenovus has been a supporter of us since 2013, supporting our literacy programs, as well as others right now,” points out Spencer-Poitras.

“They are continuing to contribute $75,000 to the district, which we use to promote literacy, which is one of our board priorities.”

While speaking with the Trending 55 Newsroom, Spencer-Poitras wanted to also talk about how the division has had to evolve with technology, mainly caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have 179 students that we are supporting centrally through online learning and we have seven and-a-half teachers we have dedicated to this,” she says.

Spencer-Poitras explains how the technology is being used.
