The North Peace Hockey League is taking a lot of good things out of this past season.
Micheal Mercredi, the President of the League, says they’ve been able to build on some momentum to help grow the league’s fanbase.
“Overall I think the league is in a good spot. The teams and the fans are what makes the league so we’re happy to have a growing fanbase and a younger fanbase. The league’s getting younger and faster so we’ve got to make sure we stay ahead of the eight-ball here and keep things expanding and rolling if we can. It was a very good year overall.”
This past season saw the expand to nine teams with the addition of the Fox Creek Knights and the return of the High Prairie Regals.
Expansion for next season has been rumoured with Peace River, Grimshaw and Nampa as likely candidates.
Mercredi says there is some factors they have to consider.
“We’ve got to make sure that we’re making the right decision on ref availability and this year we really stretched with bringing in two teams. There’s a lot of work that was done in the background working with the teams and the refs to reschedule games in the background. You’ve got to be aware of that. We’re open for expansion, but it’s got to make sense for the league.”
Mercredi says the league’s AGM later this spring will be when groups will be able to make their expansion applications.
