March 14 to 18 is Substitute Teachers Appreciation Week in Alberta.
The Northland School Division, like others in the area are celebrating substitute teachers as they are essential to keeping schools running; especially over the past two years in a global pandemic.
Superintendent of the NSD, Dr. Nancy Spencer-Poitras says they are indebted to them as many teachers have fallen ill during Covid-19. “Substitute teachers are a remarkable group of people because they walk into a classroom without knowing students and pick up the reins for that classroom and continue to carry on for the students and help them be successful in their learning.”
Dr. Spencer-Poitras says if there were no substitute teachers schools would run into great operational difficultly which makes them an essential part of the school community.
“We are celebrating Substitute Teachers Appreciation Week, but really we (NSD) celebrate every single day of the year because without them our schools would not be able to run as successfully as they can. They are often called with short notice and they’re always up to the task for providing quality instruction, so we (NSD) really appreciate everything they do for Northland students to have them achieve success.” – Dr. Nancy Spencer-Poitras
Despite the pandemic constantly shifting school environments, substitute teachers stepped up during the unprecedented times in ways that go beyond their job description and Dr. Spencer-Poitras wants to thank all that have made school as normal as possible through Covid-19.
