Our Closets Through the Decades

Well if there’s something that has changed a lot, with some wild choices over the years, it has to be fashion! Trends come and go… and some of them come back again. Let’s look through the fashion that has taken us through the last few decades!

1950’s and ’60’s

The 50’s were a time for Pencil Skirts and a tucked in blouse. Classy, but also classic. But we can’t forget the awesome poodle skirts and neck scarves! I feel like those could totally come back, or at least they should. Cus I could definitely see this generation rocking poodle skirts and doing fun designs with scarves!

Otherwise, I think the ’50s could also be summed up by James Dean: leather jackets, white shirts, and jeans.

In the 60s, we had a trend of turtlenecks, thanks to celebs like Paul Newman and Johnny Carson. I would argue that turtlenecks never really went out of style. How we style them might be a bit different, not going for long necklaces, for example, but the top itself is still a staple in my closet–especially with cold weather like this!

1970’s

The closets were pretty bright in the 70’s, with florals, mini skirts, ruffled shirts, and bell-bottom pants. John Lennon also started a trend with corduroy and round sunglasses. While I feel like corduroy is still a “very 70’s thing”, it’s another thing that I like to wear, and is also a fun part of my closet that should come back. High waisted pants, big collars with necklaces and mood rings were also quite popular fashion choices.

1980’s

This new decade did keep some of the bright colours of the last few years–maybe they even brightened up a little bit more, but the big focus now seemed to be on one’s silhouette. We had shoulder pads, parachute pants, and leg warmers to add a bit of spunk to outfits. Business attire or music video? That was the question.

1990’s

The 90’s were a time of ripped jeans, baseball caps, and Air Jordans. There were a lot of graphic tee’s and if the bright colours of the last few decades weren’t enough, there was always the neon of the 90s!

2000’s

While ripped jeans and baseball caps may have followed us out of the last decade, the new millenium also saw Juicy Couture track suits, bedazzled everything, ruffled shirts that I think got stolen from somebody’s closet in the 70s , and a lot of either long shirts with leggings or dresses with jeans underneath. While some clothes, like the track suit, was fitted, I think a big part of the new millenium was the looser fit, whether we’re talking jeans or  t-shirts.

Those are just a few things that I think stick out through the decades. Were any of these part of your closet? Are there any of these items of clothing that are still a part of your closet? Either way, hopefully it was a fun, if wacky, trip down memory lane!
