Alberta is adjusting its COVID-19 vaccination strategy following the federal government’s decision to transfer vaccine procurement responsibilities to the provinces.
Starting this fall, the province will implement a phased approach to immunization, prioritizing those at highest risk.
In Phase 1 residents of seniors’ supportive living accommodations and home care clients will receive free vaccines.
Subsequent phases will expand eligibility, with individuals in later stages required to cover the full cost of vaccination.
This targeted strategy aims to reduce vaccine wastage and ensure fiscal responsibility, addressing concerns from the 2023-24 season when over one million doses were discarded.
