Peace Country with some of the best crop yields in Alberta

October 20, 2021 – With harvest virtually over in Alberta, many wonder how producers fared this year with weather conditions not in their favour.

During the extreme heatwave at the end of June, it prematurely ripened many oil-seed crops like canola, which caused a second growth in fields close to harvest time.

This posed an issue for farmers during harvest in the Peace Country to get their mature crop off and not the young second growth.

Crop Statistician with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, Ashan Shooshtarian spoke with the newsroom about the Alberta Crop Report for October 12, 2021.

Surprisingly, Shooshtarian says yields were among the highest in the Peace region out of the province.

Shooshtarian also noted that their data collected from harvested crop in the Peace had the top two grades of spring wheat, canola and dry peas above regional five year averages.
