Peace River Council Looking at Craft Breweries Within the Community

The Town of Peace River recently received some public interest in developing and operating some craft breweries within the community.

In that regard, council came up with Bylaw 2014, which would amend the Land Use Bylaw to add production of Beer, Wine, Spirits and Liqueurs.

“The town is considering all types of liquor at this point,” Engineering & Infrastructure Director Jim McCuaig told the Trending 55 Newsroom. “As well, there’s also been consideration for micro-distilleries in other municipalities. So, the bylaw we are looking at is a comprehensive one to look at all of them.”

At this point, McCuaig says they’re look at this type of development as a discretionary use only.

“Even though these establishments can go into various regions within the town,” he said. “The town, as well as the Municipal Planning Commission, has the final say on where they can go into certain districts.”

Council discussed the recent bylaw at their November 14, 2017 council meeting, where they passed first reading unanimously.

A public hearing on this bylaw is set to take place at their November 27 regular meeting, which will be followed shortly after by a vote on both second and third readings.

McCuaig says that while there has been no formal application to operate a craft brewery within the town as of yet, the interest is there.
