
Peace River Town Council met last night. Here are some highlights:
Peace River Regional Community Policing Report
The Peace River Regional Community Policing Report for April 1st -June 30th was released and there are a few upwards trends.
There has been a 44 percent increase in property crime that has topped the list, with crimes involving weapons not far behind.
RCMP have held 4 town meetings to address the violence in communities and have taken actions such as:
-undercover officers tackling street level drug trafficking
-Increased foot patrols in the downtown area
Economic Development Committee
Economic development committee has been working hard to change the narrative by helping business owners with crime prevention when they’ve been targets by the homeless population. Also, holding Job Fairs, working with Invest Alberta, and submitting photos in an effort to bring the lucrative film industry to Peace River.
BY-LAW
The first reading of By-Law 2140 was carried. The By-Law is for an interest free loan in the amount of 20,000 for the Peace River Ski Club.
Firefighting Gear
Firefighting gear from the Peace River Fire Department will be donated to the “Firefighters without Borders” Organization. This Organization takes donated equipment from fire departments across Canada and delivers it to less fortunate, under resourced departments in Canada and around the world.
Utility Billing Date
Utility billing date has changed to the first and last day of the month. The shift to the end of the month billing takes place on august 31. The first bill will come in October. It will be for 6 weeks.
Member of a Committee
Motion has passed to support Councilor Shelly Shannon (who was not in attendance) in her application to become a Member of a Committee for Alberta Municipalities.
Economic Developers Alberta 2023 Ministry Dinner
Motion was carried to send Mayor Elaine Manzer and a member of council to attend the Economic Developers Alberta 2023 Ministry Dinner on October 18/2023.
Meeting with the Minister of Transportation
Unanimous decision to send an invitation to request a meeting with the Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors.
The three topics of discussion will be;
- Disaster Mitigation (e.g. Pat’s Creek Dam, 101 St. slide)
- Transit between towns (e.g. Falher, Fairview)
- East West Corridor (e.g. Fort McMurray)
Replacement of Hot Tub
Council has struck down the motion to increase the budget for the replacement of the hot tub at the Peace Regional Pool. Citing they will wait for the total cost of the project. 750,000 is the current ball park estimate.
Taxi Pass Program
Council has moved to direct administration to proceed with public engagement on the proposed changes to the Taxi Pass Program.
