Peace River Town Council has made a decision on what to do with the burned building remains of what used to be “Juliette’s Place”. The building went up in flames last September.
At the meeting tonight it was decided to direct administration to enter discussions with the property owner to purchase the lot for $1, and waive outstanding taxes owed, which total over $24,000.
The goal would be to later put the downtown lot up for sale in hopes of attracting a new business.
Since the fire, council has received messages from residents and downtown businesses, expressing concern that the area continues to be a safety hazard and an eye sore.
The decision didn’t come lightly, as a lot of time was spent discussing the town’s cost in the project, the potential of dealing with asbestos, liability issues, how they would go about putting the project up for bid, and the value of the land.
The hope is to have demolition, clean up, the basement filled, and the area graveled before hosting the 55 Plus Summer Games.
