A Peace River resident is now a Hall-of-Famer. Sally Barkwell was inducted into the Alberta 4-H Hall-of-Fame yesterday. Barkwell has been a Leader for the Peace Region 4-H Club for the past 20 years. Barkwell says she received the good news from the Ministry of Agriculture in November and it was special. “It is one of those honours that you don’t get very often so it was quite a wonderful thing to hear, says Barkwell.
Barkwell says the Peace Region club does a variety of activities, including learning how to care for horses and dogs. “Members learn to do by doing, such as managing their horses and dogs,” points out Barkwell. “4-H for me is more about the communication skills and the leadership skills that members get to develop as they are in the club. I guess it’s the teamwork within the club as well.”
Barkwell was asked how much longer she intends to stay involved with the club, and says she has no intentions of stepping aside anytime soon. “I intend to maintain our club for the unforeseeable future because of the potential that I continue to see with our members,” mentions Barkwell. “I started this club when my daughter was nine-years-old and because I see the program being so helpful for the youth and for them to become amazing speakers and communicators and to do any different things.”
Barkwell is a registered dietitian.
