The Province has started a pilot program to get more on-the-job learning opportunities for post-secondary students.

Advanced Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides says the Work-Integrated Learning Industry Voucher will help build job-ready skills and increase access to talent for employers.

“We’re working with three industry associations (Technology Alberta, Alberta Construction Association and BioAlberta) and we’re providing them with funding ($3.6 million over three years) so that they can create more internships and co-op and practicum placements for students.”

Nicolaides says this is part of their Alberta 2030 strategy to improve post-secondary education and the program will help students be “job ready” after they graduate.

“We know that when students have the ability to participate in these real world hands-on types of opportunities, they not only are employed faster than their counterparts that maybe didn’t engage in any kind of internship, but also they earn higher income immediately after graduation.”
