Starting today, motorists in the province need to report lost or stolen licence plates before obtaining a replacement plate.
The regulation was piloted by 12 registry agent offices across Alberta, who note that early reports of a lost or stolen plate allows police to be on guard of possible illegal activity.
When replacement plates are requested at a registry office, a police file number must be presented.
Over 46,000 plates were replaced in 2020.
