Here are some highlights:
➡ Council approved an exemption to the Traffic and Streets Bylaw No. 1746, allowing for trailers and moving vehicles to be parked in residential areas for up to 48 hours. With how the bylaw was written before, residents were not technically allowed to park a camping or moving trailer in front of their house to load or unload. With a new Director of Protective Services, we will be looking to more fully modernize this bylaw in the future.
➡ Council approved providing a Personal Day (one day off per year) for non-unionized staff. This gives non-unionized employees the same benefit as staff under the 2023-2026 CUPE Collective Agreement.
➡ Council approved a 5-year extension of the Electric Distribution Franchise Agreement between ATCO Electric and the Town.
➡ Council discussed the political appropriateness of Council wrap-up videos featuring the Mayor on our social media. Being that 2025 is an election year, there was concern that the videos are an opportunity for one official to enjoy higher visibility than other candidates that might emerge; however, Administration also has a goal to improve our communication with the community, and the Mayor is our spokesperson, election year or not. In the end, we will be continuing to post video updates from the Mayor up until three months before the election, to limit any perceived influence on the election.
Our next meeting is a Governance and Priorities meeting, plus a public hearing, on Monday, Feb. 3, 2025.
