The provincial and federal governments have a dollar for dollar matching agreement to help improve internet connectivity in rural Alberta.

Nate Glubish, the Minister of Service Alberta, says the money from this is in addition to the previous commitment from the province on addressing rural broadband.

“Earlier this year, the Alberta Government announced a $150 million commitment towards improving connectivity infrastructure in rural, remote and indigenous communities. This is some really exciting news, it essentially doubles that bringing $150 million of money from Ottawa back to Alberta to help us with this very important issue.”

He says with technology continuing to evolve it’s important that all Albertans see improvements in their connectivity.

“Everyone is reliant on access to high quality, high speed internet connectivity. The investment commitment from the Alberta government, coupled with this agreement that we’ve negotiated with the federal government to double that money is going to go a long way towards ensuring that Albertans from every corner of this province are going to see improvements in their connectivity.”

Glubish says they hope to announce the first approved projects under this plan early in the new year.
