Some provincial funds are now available to assist Mackenzie County residents with flood mitigation.

An ice jam in the Peace River caused overland flooding in the hamlets of Fort Vermilion and North Vermilion; the latter is commonly referred to as Buttertown.

Now, around $16.9 million will be available to help residents in affected areas to move away from the flood zones.

Reeve Josh Knelsen says he is thankful for the patience and resiliency of residents and business owners and the county and the province work together.

“We are not through the woods yet, but it is a step in the right direction,” says the reeve.

“Hopefully it is just a matter of time before we can put the fear of flooding behind us and never have to worry about something like that again.”

He says this money will help residents and businesses relocate away from flood zones, as well as setting up new subdivisions.

“We started construction of some subdivisions and are in the process of developing some additional land as well,” says Knelsen.
