Province invests $16.2 million in Northern Lights Gas Co-op in Lacrete

Provincial Agriculture and Forestry Minister, Devin Dreeshen was in LaCrete today to announce a natural gas supply line will be built between Peace River and the Mackenzie County hamlet.

The grant will be going to the Northern Lights Gas Co-op.

The line will run from the NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd. Wolverine River Lateral pipeline northeast of Peace River north to La Crete.

“That will ultimately build a 92 kilometre six inch high-pressure natural gas pipe up from Peace River to LaCrete,” says Dreeshen.

“It is really going to un-tap the potential of this region to be able to have secure access to natural gas.”

Dreeshen added that he expects 50 construction jobs will come from this project.

“The hope is that it can be shovel-ready right away and by 2022, it would be completed,” he explains.

The minister explained that this is part of Alberta’s $10 billion recovery plan.

Peace River MLA, Dan Williams says the 92 kilometres of pipeline is hopefully just the start.

“I am labouring to make sure we do extend it so that all residents of the constituency have reliable, cheap quality access to natural gas for our industries and our homes,” says Williams.

Williams says no one should have what he calls energy poverty.

“We should not be in a spot where we see homes freezing out two years in a row.”

Dreeshen and Williams took some time to be on the Trending 55 Newsroom’s Hot Seat and the full discussion is below.
