Some changes could soon be happening to auto insurance in Alberta.

Legislation was put forward this week by Finance Minister Nate Horner which he says will provide Albertans better and faster access to care.

“We currently have the second highest auto insurance in the country behind only Ontario. It’s been important to the Premier that we strive for a more affordable and stable system. This will take us a little bit closer down the path to a care-first model. We’re hoping to have it operationally up and running by January 1, 2027.”

Horner says the “care-first” system would establish improved access to health and medical benefits for Albertans injured in vehicle collisions.

He adds that they are looking to stabilize rates and make them more affordable.

“Currently we have a system where if you exceed a fairly meagre level of benefits, the only option you have is to sue an at-fault driver to seek a claim. What we’re trying to do is take the need for the legal system largely out of the process and we’ll have a process where the benefits will be given more automatically.”
