Province Preparing For Possible Drought

Growing concerns around drought conditions has lead to the provincial government coming out with a drought response plan.

Environment Minister Rebecca Schulz says there are a number of things that the plan covers.

“From water conservation and water sharing agreements to what it would take to declare an emergency, what would essentially lead us to that and then how we would prioritize water. Of course when it comes to water priority if we are in an emergency situation, really the priority is human health and safety and of course animal and livestock health and safety as well.”

Schulz says a number of discussions with municipalities and other water users went into the province putting the plan together.

Some municipalities in the Peace Region have expressed concerns around the dry conditions and Schulz says her department has been working with them.

“Just last week, I know the department and myself were in contact with at least four municipalities trying to work through some potential issues or making sure that the communities continue to have access to water even when those water levels are lower than usual.”

While the province is prepared with the plan, Schulz says she’s optimistic that more moisture will be on the way.
