Province says employers should seek legal advice on mandatory vaccines for workers

The province says if any workplace is considering a mandatory vaccine policy for its employees, the business should check with its lawyer first.

People in the region were reached out to the Trending 55 Newsroom asking if this was legal for employers to do.

The Newsroom got a statement from a Spokesperson for the Ministry of Labour.

“All employers should consider seeking legal advice on issues of human rights, labour and employment law, privacy, health information, and occupational health and safety before asking for proof of vaccination or creating vaccine requirements at the workplace.
Immunization will not be mandatory in Alberta.

Immunization against the COVID-19 virus is highly encouraged and recommended and is free of charge.

A mandatory vaccination program is not supported by Chief Medical Officers of Health across Canada. The required measures already in place reduce risks associated with un-immunized workers. These measures include active and passive health assessment screening, staying home when sick, continuous masking, hand hygiene, contact and droplet precautions with appropriate personal protective equipment and physical distancing.”
