The Provincial government is beginning work on drafting a new kindergarten to grade 6 social studies curriculum.

Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides says there will be a lot of engagement work done over the next several months.

“We want to take some time over the next few months to talk with parents, teachers, subject matter experts, first nation, metis and inuit leaders and other to work together to see how we can build a new curriculum that will help students up for success. The content is still being worked out.”

Nicolaides says he’s already been meeting with some of their “key partners”.

“I was meeting yesterday with leaders from the metis community and over the past few weeks with different educational partners, school boards, first nation leaders, parent groups and other organizations. The point of that is kind of a first check-in, just to get a sense of where we’re at and where we need to go.”

Nicolaides says he’ll be meeting with subject matter experts to “get a better idea of what should be taught and at what grade”.

He adds that they hope to have a draft curriculum ready to be tested by the spring of 2024.
