With schools having to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Peace River School Division has adjusted delivery of classes so students can keep learning. Classrooms are no longer physically at schools, but rather in the homes of students using virtual methods of receiving lessons. PRSD is using Google Hangouts for students, teachers and staff to communicate via, video chat, messages, etc. If students do not have internet capabilities in their homes, hard copy lessons are at schools for families to pick up instead.

“…A sense of community has probably grown over this time.”

Ward 3 member for PRSD’s Board of Trustees, Darren Kuester spoke on how the division has been handling the situation, and he says he’s extremely proud of how fast staff were able to change the formats of classes. Kuester noted on the pandemic saying “If there is a positive out of this, what it’s been is a sense of community has probably grown over this time. I just wanna thank everybody who’s working diligently to still make education happen.”

Board meetings are still happening just not in person, but rather over phone, messaging and video chats. One main concern people have been voicing is graduation ceremonies, and Kuester said it is on the agenda to speak about but if they are to happen it would be under the governments recommendations as they don’t want to put anyone in danger.
