Push to Sell Wildrose and PC Memberships Continue as Deadline Looms

The push to sell memberships in the Wildrose and Progressive Conservative (PC) Parties continues.

Each party is holding a Unity referendum among its members to merge into the United Conservative Party (UCP). The Wildrose will hold theirs via a Special General Meeting (SGM) on Saturday, July 22, 2017, while the PCs will have their polls open from 8 AM on Thursday, July 20 to 6 PM on Saturday, July 22.

To pass, it would need 75 percent of the Wildrose membership, while it needs 50+1 percent of the PCs. To vote, Wildrose memberships have to be purchased by Saturday, July 8, 2017, while Tory memberships must be purchased by Wednesday, July 12, 2017.

To register to vote among the PCs, they can do so on the party’s website from July 1 until July 14, 2017. Each member will receive a Personal Identification Number (PIN), which will be required in order to cast a ballot.

“Our members have a historic opportunity to choose the path forward for our party and our province,” said PC Party President Len Thom in a press release. “I’d like to take this opportunity for every member of our party to register by internet or phone and vote in our referendum.”

“Many good people have worked hard on this Unity agreement,” Wildrose MLA Pat Stier said in a statement at the Alberta Legislature. “And there’s much more work ahead. I can wholeheartedly say that everybody involved is there for the right reasons.”

Registration guidelines are still being worked on by the Wildrose. For those unable to attend the SGM in person, the party’s Executive Committee is arranging for members to vote via telephone and/or online. Details about when members have to be registered to vote will be released as soon as they are available.
