Over the weekend, commentators on social media say that there were several sightings of moose cross the roadways along Highway 2 near the airport and Roma Drive areas.

“Due to their big size, moose are much more dangerous on the roads,” Constable Jessica Roy told the Trending 55 Newsroom. “Also, due to their darker colour, they are harder to spot at night.”

Roy says there are ways to prevent such collisions from happening.

“We do recommend that motorists slow down their vehicles when they see animals near the road,” she said. “They also need to keep in mind that the road conditions at this time of year make it harder to slow down, and it may take a couple more seconds to get to that complete stop.”

Police also recommend that you keep your vehicle cleaned at all times when you see an animal, moose or otherwise, on the highway.

“That includes both the headlights, as well as the windshield,” said Roy. “You need to make sure you have enough windshield washer fluid to keep it clean enough so you can see your surroundings as you drive.”
