Remembrance Day ceremonies change due to COVID-19

November 9, 2020 Local News
poppy-2

This year has been different for events and holidays, but COVID-19 will not put a stop on Remembrance Day. Even though communities cannot hold a traditional indoor ceremony to honour our fallen, wounded and currently serving veterans; they are finding alternate ways.

In McLennan, Falher, Girouxville and Donnelly there will be outdoor ceremonies at the usual time; still doing everything the way it has always been, just following COVID guidelines and restrictions.

President for the Royal Canadian Legion McLennan branch, David Champion says they will have at least one representative at each of the four ceremonies. “We don’t want to stop remembering those who fought in the wars, were wounded or died and the ones who serve currently and put themselves at risk” said Champion.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, Champion says “Of course Remembrance Day itself signifies the end of the fist World War but it’s important to commemorate others ending too.” Champion noted there are only a handful of veterans left in the area including one that is 102 years old.

If you want more information on when and where the Remembrance Day ceremonies are, you can go to their Facebook page.
