School Bus safety continues this week in school divisions’ right across the Peace & Mackenzie regions.
This year’s theme is “Rider Rules = Safe to School.”
“It’s focused around students knowing what they should be doing to help ensure their safety,” Darren Kuester, the Chairperson of the Peace River School Division’s (PRSD) Board of Trustees, told the Trending 55 Newsroom. “That includes standing back three feet from the curb, as well as dressing appropriately for inclement weather.”
Other tips include staying seated while on the bus, keeping all isles clear, keeping voices down to a minimum, and waiting for the bus to stop when entering or exiting.
“(Safety) is, of course, an ongoing issue all year round,” continued Kuester. “But during Safety Week, we just want to heighten awareness, for all the students, an all the communities as well.”
Within the PRSD, transportation staff travels to schools to educate students, drivers and staff on school bus safety. Students then participate in various presentations, watch bus safety videos, as well as taking part in mock evacuations.
Kuester says the division would like to thank all their bus drivers, staff, students, parents, community organizations, as well as community members, for their commitment to safe school bus loading and off-loading.
The PRSD transports around 3,000 students around 11,589 kilometres per day.
