StatsCan Numbers Show Three Prairie Provinces With Canada’s Highest Murder Rates

A new Statistics Canada survey is out for the nation’s homicide rates.

In 2016, 611 murders were committed across Canada, with 116 of those lives being taken in Alberta.

In terms of raw numbers, Alberta has the second highest number in Canada, behind Ontario at 206.

But in terms of rate per 100-thousand residents, this province actually ranks third.

Alberta had 2.73 homicides per 100-thousand people, compared with 4.69 for Saskatchewan, which for the second year in a row, had the highest ratio of murders in Canada.

Mantoba had the second highest rate, coming in at 3.19.

As well, two cities located in the Prairie Provinces occupy two of the top three spots in terms of highest murders in the metropolitan areas.

Edmonton is in the number two spot at 3.39 per 100-thousand, while Regina is number two at 3.23.

In this category, Thunder Bay, Ontario is on top, having 6.64 killings per 100-thousand residents.
