Steam Explosion at Peace River DMI’s Recovery Boiler

Daishowa-Marubeni International (DMI) Limited in Peace River had an incident take place on Friday, September 22, 2017.

A tube leak caused a smelt water reaction in their recovery boiler, causing a steam explosion.

Damage is currently being assessed to determine the extent of the damage, as well as the required repairs.

“The Peace River Pulp Division would like to extend its appreciation to those team members who responded to the incident with precision and dedication,” PRPD Mill Manager Bill Downing said in a news release. “We are thankful no team members were injured, who are our first priority. We are working together to determine our next steps with various support groups, but we do anticipate an interruption to production while we do our investigation, inspections, and repairs.”

The recovery boiler’s purpose is to reclaim the spent pulping chemicals in the process of combustion, and to capture the heating value as steam to generate electricity and supply process steam demands.

The Trending 55 Newsroom is awaiting further information at this time.
