- The mayor of Falher is receiving recognition provincially. Donna Buchinski is the recipient of the Alberta Municipalities Award of Excellence.
Buchinski was honoured for the creation of the Smoky River Regional Water and Waste Commission, the completion of the Falher Regional Multiplex, and the regionalization of the Smoky River Fire Department. - The MD of Peace is proceeding with business this summer. At a recent Council meeting, a Tax Installment Payment plan was established, where landowners can pay in monthly installments.
Council has also approved the installation on a fire suppression T at Strong Creek Park, providing a designated point for firefighters to access water quickly. - Crews are continuing to gain the upper-hand on fires in the area, but new fires keep popping up, thanks to Mother Nature.
Fire 72 in the High Level Forest area is burning out of control, about 45 KM west of Zama City.
Fire 61, north of Fox Lake continues to be out of control, at nearly 107,000 hectares. Both were caused by lightning. - Canada’s inflation rate is now at its lowest rate in three and a half years.
The rate is at 2.5% as of last month, and officials are saying prices for travel tours, passenger vehicles and electricity helped drive the rate down.
On the other side of the coin, higher rents and mortgage payments, as well as higher prices at the pumps and grocery stores are still the worry. - Registration is continuing to be accepted for the annual Peace River Job Fair.
Forms for businesses participating can be found on the Chamber’s website and Facebook page, as well as the Economic Development Committee’s website. - Training Camp for the Fairview Flyers has been announced for the 2025 NWJHL season.
Flyers camp runs September 3 and 5 in Grimshaw, and September 6 and 7 at the Fairplex. - The Toronto Blue Jays play the rubber match of a three-game set at Roger’s Center tonight, against Cincinnati. Yariel Rodriguez starts for the Jays against Nick Martinez.
- Air Quality Advisories are in place in the Peace and Mackenzie today. It will be a mostly cloudy afternoon and quite cool.
Highs this afternoon are in the mid teens to the low 20’s. Lows tonight in the Peace and Mackenzie will be cool enough to have a risk of frost, and around 10 in the Big Lakes.
It could get wet on Saturday.
