- The strike of Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Kansas City is impacting Grain Producers in the Peace Region.
Officials say over 10,000 semi trucks would have to be used to transport as much grain as rail transport does. - Big Lakes County is undertaking plans to repair the Outdoor Rink in Grouard.
The rink was built in 2018, but boards collapsed that winter puting the rink in a n immediate state of disrepair. The committee looking after the rink dissolved in 2020. - Final preparations are being made for one of the busiest weekends in the Summer in the Peace Region.
Summer’s end festivals are happening in High Level and Fairview, while Berwyn has their celebration for the end of a big infrastructure project in the Village.
The Town of Peace River is prepping for the annual maintenance shutdown of the pool, and people are getting their last licks of holidays in before teachers go back to work for the 2025 school year. - At a recent MD of Peace Council meeting, a Tax Installment Payment plan was established, where landowners can pay in monthly installments.
Council has also approved the installation on a fire suppression T at Strong Crek Park, providing a designated point for firefighters to access water quickly. - The mayor of Falher is receiving recognition provincially. Donna Buchinski is the recipient of the Alberta Municipalities Award of Excellence.
Buchinski was honoured for the creation of the Smoky River Regional Water and Waste Commission, the completion of the Falher Regional Multiplex, and the regionalization of the Smoky River Fire Department. - Week 13 of the CFL season starts tonight, with Saskatchewan in Toronto. Hamilton in Winnipeg tomorrow, BC’s in Ottawa on Saturday, Edmonton in Montreal on Sunday.
- The Toronto Blue Jays start a four-game weekend set at home to the LA Angels tonight. This after coughing up a 6-0 lead yesterday to lose two of three to Cincinnati.
- Former Major League MVP and Current Canadian baseball star Joey Votto has announced his retirement.
Born in Toronto, Votto played 17 seasons with Cincinnati before signing a minor league contract with the Blue Jays. - Former Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach Ken Miller has passed away.
Miller was part of the Riders organization for five seasons leading them to three Grey Cup games, winning once in 2007.
Miller passes away of Cancer at his home in Asheville North Carolina, he was 82 years of age. - The sunshine will be making an appearance this afternoon in the Northwest. Highs today are in the low 20’s, lows tonight around 10.
Saturday is expected to be wet in the Peace and Big Lakes, as digits cool off.
