Last night I took in The Meg 2: The Trench and wasn’t sure what to expect. I re-watched the first one to refresh myself a little on the story in preparation. Movies like The Meg 2 I don’t have a lot of expectations going in because you know it won’t have a massive story and will rely on some humor and action to get it done. That was very much the case in this movie.
The movie brings back Jason Statham, Sophia Cai, Paige Kennedy and Cliff Curtis from the first film while adding Wu Jing, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Sienna Guillory, Skyler Samuels and Melissanthi Mahut to the cast.
The plot of the film is “A research team encounters multiple threats while exploring the depths of the ocean, including a malevolent mining operation.”
The movie is not without it’s charms and funny moments but a lot of the humor seems unintentional and comes across as cheesy at best which almost gives it a parody vibe in a way. It is a great movie to just sit down and shut your brain off and watch. There is something charming about it in the cheesy-ness of it that almost makes it good.
In the end I don’t expect a 3rd installment but it does leave that as a possibility. Again if you just want to shut your brain down and watch a film that requires zero thinking it’s not a terrible movie to watch.
