A traffic stop on Highway 35 just outside of High Level in July of 2016 has resulted in three people being sent to prison.
On Wednesday, June 28, 2017, 25-year-old Wayne Darrell Brown and 27-year-old Shawn Karl Brown, both of Stony Plain, were convicted of various weapons-related charges.
Wayne faced five firearm offences, possession of a controlled substance, possession of an explosive device, and an offence under the Traffic Safety Act. He was sentenced to 5 years in prison, and given a lifetime ban on owning or possessing a firearm.
Shawn, meanwhile, had faced charges of possessing an explosive substance with intent to cause serious property damage, as well as three firearm offences. He was given a 4-year jail sentence, as well as a 10-year firearm prohibition.
Earlier, on March 20, 2017, 24-year-old Cheyanne Huber of Hinton was convicted of five counts of failing to comply with release and probation conditions, as well as possession of a firearm. She was given 328 days in custody, as well as a 10-year firearm prohibition.
As well, all three were ordered to submit their DNA to the National DNA Data Bank.
During that traffic stop, one of the suspects was arrested on outstanding warrants. The arrest resulted in the recovery of multiple firearms with ammunition, an explosive device, and controlled substances.
Further investigations revealed that several of the firearms were stolen from Hay River, Northwest Territories in April 2016.
