The provincial government has gave the go ahead for demolition of three Alberta Health Services owned properties in High Prairie. The buildings to be flattened are the former J.B. Wood Nursing Home, the former High Prairie Health Complex and the old EMS station and garage. The three properties were vacated in April 2017 when healthcare and continuing care services were moved to the new High Prairie Health Complex and J.B. Wood Continuing Care Centre.
High Prairie Mayor Brian Panasiuk commented on behalf of the town council saying “We’re very excited to see the buildings demolished, making room for new development.” Panasiuk said the town council had been working closely with the provincial government and AHS to get the project underway.
The demolition of the buildings and remediation of the land is expected to take around 10 months to complete and Alberta Infrastructure will be issuing a request for proposal in the coming weeks for consulting services for the project.
MLA for Peace River, Dan Williams was present for the announcement and said “A project like this benefits all of northwestern Alberta,” referring to removing the old infrastructure.
Until demotion work begins, AHS will continue to carry out and monitor security measures to put a stop to vandalism on the vacant buildings.
