Bill C-49, which is also known as the Transportation Modernization Act, has passed third reading in the House of Commons.
The Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC) says they are very pleased that it’s made it this far, saying that once it becomes law, it will result in a more efficient and accountable rail transportation system that will meet the needs of Canada’s growing grains sector.
“It’s clear that the federal government has listened to our industry,” AWC Chairperson Kevin Auch said in a news release. “With Canada’s Agriculture sector working to increase its export capacity, AWC has pressed hard to ensure a more efficient and accountable transportation system.”
Before the bill receives royal assent, it must pass through the Senate. The AWC says that this legislation must be treated as a priority.
The commission adds that with troubling signs of delays in spotting of railcars and fulfillment of delivery contracts in many areas, it is critical that mechanisms within the bill are in place to ensure that this year’s crop can move to Canada’s export markets without delay.
“While we didn’t get some key amendments we had asked for,” Auch continued. “The legislation is still a major step forward for farmers.”
One of the amendments that weren’t included was some needed improvements to long-haul inter-switching.
