
On Jan. 14, 2022, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Grande Prairie RCMP Crime Reduction Unit were conducting patrols in Grande Prairie, when a vehicle was observed with a burnt out tail light. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, however the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed. The officer did not pursue the vehicle.
Further investigation led Grande Prairie RCMP Crime Reduction Unit to a gas station in Beaverlodge, Alta., where the vehicle was located. The female passenger was arrested and the male driver was also arrested after attempting to flee the area on foot.
A search of the driver, passenger and vehicle resulted in the seizure of several items including what is believed to be:
· Approximately 28.7 grams of cocaine
· Approximately 2.1 grams of methamphetamine
Police also seized a replica handgun, $650.00 in Canadian Currency and multiple other items relating to drug trafficking.
Derek Charles Shaw (35), of Grande Prairie has been charged with:
· Possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine
· Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
· Obstruct peace officer
Danita Agnes Banner (46), of Grande Prairie has been charged with:
· Possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine
· Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
· Flight from peace officer
· Possession of a controlled substance
Following a judicial hearing, Derek Shaw was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on Feb. 28, 2022.
Danita Banner was released from custody on an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on Mar. 2, 2022.
