The MP for Peace River-Westlock says Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau is using the Nova Scotia mass shooting to further his political agenda.
Arnold Viersen did not mince words when asked about legislation passed last week to ban approximately 1,500 types of firearms.
“I think it’s disgusting that the Prime Minister is standing on the graves of the victims of the Nova Scotia shooting to advance his political agenda,” says Viersen.
“While our hearts go out to the families of the victims, Justin Trudeau needs to stand down and stop taking advantage of a major crisis and focus on getting Canada recovered from COVID-19.”
In a virtual sitting of the COVID-19 Committee, Viersen asked about the legislation and was told that any questions must be related to the pandemic.
Viersen explains that a colleague asked a question about an issue not related to the current pandemic and was not able to do so.
“The Wet’suwet’en First Nation had not been able to meet with the minister and yet the minister met with the hereditary chiefs so we were asking about that,” explains Viersen.
“The liberals said ‘we cannot talk about that right now because this meeting is for COVID’ so our point was ‘why can you meet with one side during COVID and not the other?’”
Viersen that says that since it didn’t seem like the government wanted to address that topic, which he would ask about firearms.
“Apparently, they couldn’t talk about firearms either because of COVID, which was high hypocrisy because they had spent the whole morning talking about it,” says Viersen.
Viersen feels that taking guns away from responsible owners will not do anything to address the issue of illegal weapons.
“It is lazy legislation to go after law abiding citizens,” points out Viersen. “This will not do anything to change the outcome of gun violence in Canada. Nothing announced (last week) would have changed the outcome on the Nova Scotia shooting.”
In closing, Viersen had some pointed words for Trudeau.
“Justin Trudeau should bring the House of Commons back for a confidence vote if he is so confident that this is what Canadians want right now. Let’s go back to work!”
