Peace River-Westlock MP, Arnold Viersen doesn’t feel that former Governor General, Julie Payette should be entitled to benefits that cost taxpayers over $350,000 annually.
Viersen did not comment on the circumstances that led to Payette stepping down but says the real issue he has in her getting rewarded for not completing her term.
“When you quit your job, you are not entitled to employment insurance, so why is Julie Payette entitled to a lifetime pension when she never completed her term as Governor General?” wonders Viersen.
Viersen explains that a petition was put forward by a Conservative MP from Quebec and says the government needs to provide answers.
“I know that Canadians have been outraged by this and it is time to tell Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau that he is directly responsible for this,” he says.
While a petition with enough signatures could force a response from the government, there is no guarantee there will be action.
“We will definitely get a response,” explains Viersen.
“As to what the government does around revoking the annual lifetime pension, we will have to wait and see.”
