As of February 14, 2022, all students in K-12 schools in Alberta are no longer required to wear a mask at school.
The Peace River School Division released a statement the day after the changes were made regarding voluntary mask wearing by students; saying they will continue to support students that wish to wear a mask within school.
Superintendent of the PRSD, Adam Murray said since the rule has been lifted, some students are still wearing masks. “They feel safer wearing a mask and it’s something possibly they are getting used to or they feel is important to them.” said Murray on mask wearing being a students personal choice now.
“Students right now do not need to wear a mask, but if they feel like wearing a mask they will be provided to them and they’ll be supported and respected.” -Adam Murray, PRSD Superintendent
Murray said so far, no mentioning of bullying about masks from any schools has come his way. “What happens in schools nowadays is cyberbullying on social media and we deal with it immediately if it’s brought to our attention.” Murray said when asked how bullying is dealt with in the division.
Staff, teachers and all adults in PRSD schools are required to wear a mask a per the provincial mask mandate, which plans to be lifted on March 1 if hospitalizations are trending downwards in Alberta.
