Peace River MLA Dan Williams says he’s got a number of priorities for him moving forward.
With recent discussions around a possible nuclear power plant in the area, Williams says there’s a lot of opportunities it could bring.
“For us to see a growing economy, a safe reliable consistent supply of energy which will be needed to grow our economy and agri-food processing and value added manufacturing. This would be a terrific opportunity for us to be a part of an economy of Alberta for the next century. It’s a generational project if this goes forward.”
Williams says there would be extensive consultations with local residents and first nations before such a project would go ahead.
Meanwhile after the recent fire evacuations on the Little Red River Cree Nation, Williams says he wants to see some paving happen on that section of Highway 58.
“It’s an incredibly important corridor for us. We’d like to see a connection across the north of Alberta at some point. The economic contribution would be huge, but more importantly I don’t know another community in the province that has 7,000 people and the only road in and out isn’t paved.”
Williams says he’ll be looking for support from municipalities, chambers of commerce and other first nations to get that highway paved.
