As reported earlier, a black mold issue was discovered at the Peace River Regional Women’s Shelter during some much-needed maintenance repairs.
Alternate accommodations for the families in residence were found immediately and families were relocated as quickly and as safely as possible.
On Friday December 1, a specialized health and safety assessment was done. We received the report the following week which indicated Black Mold was present in a number of locations throughout the building. We have met with the contractor. The cost to remove the Black Mold and complete the renovations is estimated to be $260,000 with a potential for an additional $120 000 in furnace replacements. This is significantly more than we had expected when we began repairs.
For the time being, the health and safety inspector has indicated that staff can safely work on the main floor where there is office space. Families in need can call the shelter and staff will continue to provide whatever support they can although we cannot house families at this time.
It is our goal to have the Peace River Regional Women’s Shelter in full operation by early March 2024.
We are working with all levels of government to cover the costs. We ask local First Nations, businesses and individual community members to consider donating to this
project.
