Yes! I love this series.
I was so excited for it to come out since I saw the first trailer. A new take on Spider-Man, one of my favourite heroes. Spider-Man stories have been done so many times at this point so does this one differentiate itself enough. Yes, and they do it so well.
We start by seeing Peter’s origin when he gets the spider bite that changes his life forever but then the show skips ahead a few months to when he has a basic grasp of his powers and is starting to help people. He is still figuring things out. How to be a good hero, and what it means to help people. Throughout this series we see him start to come into his own and build friendships and alliances that make him who he is.
This show originally started out as a prequel to the MCU Spider-Man. Through development, they realized that it wasn’t really feasible to make a prequel, it wouldn’t have been as good. So, they decided to do their own thing. I think it was the right call. This allowed them to introduce new characters, jam it full of references and cameos and tell a more unique story. As a fan of Spider-Man, there are so many things that I am picking up on. For a newcomer, they are also doing a fantastic job of introducing these characters for the first time.
One stand-out thing about the series is the animation style. It has a very comic book look to it and I really like it. There are times when a scene transition will move across the screen like a comic book panel and I think it adds so much personality to the series. Speaking of personality, throughout the 10 episodes, we get to see Peter in a few different suits and it’s so good to see his growth from homebrewed hero to the one we know and love.
The music in the show is great as well. There are many orchestral songs that give the classic Spiderman feel. Not to say it’s dated a few licensed songs play at key moments each of which I recognized and felt fit really well and added to the scenes. they also remixed the classic Spider-Man theme to give it a more modern feel.
The show has been confirmed for a season 2 and 3 which is perfect because right now I of course want to see more. I also have so many un answered questions.
If I’ve swayed you and you want to check it out it can be found on Disney plus. Disney actually posted the full first episode so you can check that out for free below!
