Fairview Flyers Drop Fourth in a Row

The Fairview Flyers are still looking for their first win in the Northwest Junior Hockey League (NWJHL) since beating the County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings 5-3 on Thursday, November 16, 2017.

The Flyers have played the JDA Kings twice since then, including this past Wednesday evening at the Fairplex. And of course, they’ve lost both times. The latter game saw the Flyers up by two points in the third period, but the Kings caught up and edged them out 5-4 in overtime.

Jared Moffat scored two goals for Fairview, while Spencer Bjorklund also got one in net, and Trevor Tokarz registered a goal and two assists. Also registering assists for the Flyers were Tanner Dei, Kyle Cairns, Zacheri Schlachter, Dawson Blanchette, Matt Leuken, and Bailey Gagne.

As well, Alex Sawchuk put up a valiant effort in net, stopping 33 of 38 shots the JDA Kings tried to get across the goal line.

But, in the end, Darrel Hewko scored unassisted at about 50 seconds into OT, allowing the Kings to hand the Flyers their fourth straight loss.

It keeps the defending NWJHL champions down in fifth place in the standings at 7-9-and-1, good for 15 points.

One other match-up went in league play last night, with the Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks edging out the Fort St. John Huskies 6-5. This puts the Jr. Canucks in first place in the standings with 27 points, leapfrogging both the Huskies and the North Peace Navigators, who each have 26.

The Navs, with a record of 13-and-5, will try to regain control of first this weekend. They play the Canucks themselves on Friday in Dawson Creek. And then on Saturday, they head to Beaverlodge to take on the Blades.

Getting back to the Flyers, they’re set to head to Sexsmith on Friday to take on the Vipers. On Saturday, it’ll be their turn to play against the Jr. Canucks.
