Millions Of Trees Being Planted For Caribou Habitat Recovery

Millions of new trees are going to be planted across northern Alberta, as part of a project for recovering caribou habitats.

Rebecca Schulz, the province’s Environment Minister, says over $55 million will be spent over the next six years for this.

“We know it’s very important for us, especially in Northern Alberta, to reclaim legacy seismic lines that really have been left barren since those trees were cleared decades ago. Re-foresting those areas is complex and challenging work, it does require some special expertise from northern Albertans.”

Schulz says these tree planing efforts will create hundreds of jobs in the region.

“Since 2019, more than 4500 km of seismic lines have already been assessed and treated in caribou ranges. That’s 2400 km in the last 18 months alone. This will help to create local jobs in Northern Alberta. On the environmental side, it’s great that we’re restoring that habitat.”
