Finish Him!
Mortal Kombat 2 Picks up after the first one, where our heroes are now recruiting the iconic character Johnny Cage! This film follows the characters we know, and some new ones, as they actually now take part in the Mortal Kombat Tournament. I recently watched the first film to get ready for this one. In that one, they are just preparing for the tournament, so it is nice to see them finally compete alongside the new fighters.
First off, this movie isn’t perfect. I still find it weird that they introduced a brand new movie original character, Cole, in the last film. Only for him to not survive very long into this movie. Maybe they heard the feedback about him and just wanted him out early? I also find it weird how the Mortal Kombat symbols were a big thing in the last film, and they weren’t mentioned once in that movie. It’s not really relevant, but they built these things up so much in the last film, and with it being a direct sequel seems weird not to mention it at all. The other thing is that Cole sounds like he is going to be the one to recruit Jonny at the end of the last film, when in this movie, he doesn’t meet him till later.
But enough with the critiques. I actually really like this movie; it was really fun to see all these iconic characters do their special moves and fight each other. I feel like this one improves upon the first, focusing more on the things that people love about the franchise and not trying to make it something new. Of course, they leave it open for a sequel, and if they keep going in this direction, I wouldn’t mind it. There were a lot of moments that made me laugh and legit gasp and cheer for just the sheer insanity and gore that the series is known for.
The games have a story, but it is nice to see it get expanded upon here in the films. We get to learn more about Katana’s backstory, and she is a very compelling character in this film.
Overall, if you are a fan of the games, I think you will enjoy this entry. They even brought Kano back, who was the best part of the first film. I would recommend giving this one a watch. I had a lot of fun with it, but if you are not convinced, check out the trailer below.
