Seeding for major crops is progressing across the region, however, the late start continues to have farmers behind the 5- and 10-year seeding averages.

According to the most recent Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation Crop, field conditions have improved thanks to recent warmer temperatures and wind which has helped to dry fields. However, some areas are still dealing with significant wet spots.

As of the May 12 report, 5% of all seeding in the region is now complete, with Spring Wheat and Dry Peas leading the way at 11% and 10% respectively. The 5-year average is 24% complete, with a 10-year average of 19%.

The high moisture levels are reflected with 85% of fields within a good or excellent rating for surface soil moisture. The 5-year average is 57%, and the 10-year average is 61%.
