The province has a number of goals for improving post-secondary education with their Alberta 2030 strategy.

Advanced Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides says one of their big goals is encouraging students to pursue opportunities in the trades.

“I do have a bill before the assembly right now that’s going to modernize trades and apprenticeship education to help create new pathways for people to experience hands-on learning. There’s incredible value in hands-on and we want to encourage more Albertans, young Albertans primarily, to find opportunities in the trades.”

Nicolaides says they have a number of other goals as part of this.

“Many other elements we are working on as part of that strategy including access, making sure that our rural and remote communities have access to high quality programs. Supporting some of the great research work that occurs on campuses. The real heart is to make sure our students are job ready when they graduate.”

Some other parts of Alberta 2030 include making the province a destination for international students and getting more financial flexibility for colleges and universities.
