Eligibility of One Northern Sunrise Councillor Challenged in Court

Northern Sunrise County has been served a court challenge by the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench in Peace River.

It is alleged that one of its six councilors had provided false information when filing their nomination papers for the October municipal election.

The claimant alleges that said councilor didn’t live in the ward, or even the county, at the time of nomination. The court docket further says that the candidate owed tax arrears or other debits to the county in excess of the limits prescribed in the Local Authorities Election Act.

All of which, according to the docket, that makes the council member ineligible to serve.

The Trending 55 Newsroom was able to reach Northern Sunrise County by phone. It did confirm that they have received notice of the challenge, but that they couldn’t comment any further, as the matter was now before the courts.

The case was filed on November 27, 2017. The newsroom received a copy of the court docket through email on Tuesday, December 5.

The case is scheduled to be debated in a Peace River courtroom on Monday, January 29, 2018.
