Guy’s Danika Aubin is having a good time in her first season of college hockey.

Aubin goes to Manhattanville College, a Division 3 school in New York, and says she’s one of a number of rookies on the team.

“We’ve got a big incoming class this year with eight new people. We had a little bit of an adjustment period, but after Christmas we’ve won most of our games. It’s definitely and adjustment. The girls are much older and much bigger but I think I’ve been doing pretty good.”

In addition to playing hockey at Manhattanville College, Aubin says she’s majoring in education and her coaches and professors are very accommodating to help her balance her school work around her hockey schedule.

“My mom, my aunt and my grandma were all teachers so I just knew that it was always something I really wanted to do. Since I’ve been down here I’ve actually added a major. I’m double majoring with education and criminal law which I’m really excited about”

Speaking of her family, Aubin say her dad and her brother were the two biggest people that helped her hockey career.

“I grew up playing with my brother a lot and my dad was coaching me through most years. I’d wake up in the morning early, go practice with my brother at 6 AM with my dad out there. My dad would always help me out and give me tips and he actually was able to coach me up until my bantam year.”

Her brother is North Peace Navigators forward Zacharie Aubin, and Danika says they are “competitive” with each other.

One big story in hockey recently was the debut of the Professional Women’s Hockey League.

Aubin says its “really inspiring” to see it get off the ground and believes that this can help motivate more young girls in minor hockey today.

“Having that goal to be able to focus on, now the whole game’s changed. It’s not just college is the end game, now you can go past the college level and you can go and play professional and you can be like the boys in a way where you can treat college like your junior years and then go on to play professional which is really good to see.”
