The increased usage of electricity in Alberta during last week’s heat wave has the NDP concerned about electicity costs.

Kathleen Ganley, the NDP’s Energy Critic, says increasing power costs not only affect residential properties, but farmers and small businesses as well.

“A farm using an average of 44,000 kwh would see a potential increase of around $900 on a regulated rate option based on previous swings. Similarly for a small business, you’re looking at a potential increase when small businesses have been really struggling through this pandemic.”

Ganley says there needs to be a limit on price increases for electricity.

“Life has gotten significantly more expensive under Jason Kenney and the UCP. They’ve allowed insurance rates to skyrocket to name just one. Now we’re seeing these power bills added on when people are struggling right now.”

Ganley adds the government needs to take a look at widening costs for electricity delivery through transmission and distribution.
